This research-driven internship charts new territories for the L.A. Times. From new storytelling technologies to novel user experiences, we take on unique challenges faced by the newspaper and deliver actionable insights from our experiments.
Quoteworthy is a Chrome extension targeted at improving news engagement through article sharing. The intuitive interface allows users to generate beautifully designed quote graphics with proper attributions. The tool not only reduces the friction between article sharing and social platforms, but also aims to combat misinformation.
Readers have many ways to access news—from picking up a print, opening a browser, or checking their email inbox. How can the Los Angeles Times mobile app provide unique value to readers, in ways that other platforms can’t? Our research project discovered that helping users build habits through thoughtful personalization and valuable utility content might be the key.
The first augmented reality project developed at the L.A. Times is about something that everybody loves - cheeseburgers. Using the latest 3D scanning technologies, we brought some of the best cheeseburgers in town to our audiences. We even made the AR experience accessible to our print readers.
The technology behind podcasts has largely remained unchanged since its creation in the early 2000s. What can we do to make it more interactive and engaging? This project explores the next generation of audio storytelling.
To obtain better placement in search results, we developed an algorithm that generates SEO keyword suggestions for our editors based on Google Trends, with the goal of saving editors time. Semantic analysis and NLP techniques are used to identify the relevance and popularity of keywords.
